FAQ's - Things the ReStore Gets Asked All The Time
What is the Habitat ReStore?
There are over thirty Habitat ReStores in Michigan. A ReStore is a retail outlet where donated building materials and a variety of home improvement merchandise are sold at 30-75% below retail prices. ReStore allow Habitat for Humanity to build more homes in partnership with families in need. When businesses and individuals donate reusable goods to Habitat ReStores, these materials end up as part of remodeling, home improvement and decorating projects instead of in landfills.
Is the Habitat ReStore open to the public?
Yes! Anyone is welcome to shop at the Habitat ReStore. Store hours are 9-5 Tuesday through Saturday.
What does the Habitat ReStore sell?
Inventory consists of but is not limited to: cabinets, lighting, plumbing fixtures, hardware, roofing, carpet, tools, trim, doors, lumber, flooring, windows, furniture and appliances. Check back often. Our inventory changes daily!
How are the items priced at the Habitat ReStore?
Materials are sold to the public at 30 - 75% off the retail price.
Where do items come from?
The Habitat ReStore accepts new and used building-related materials and home furnishings from contractors, suppliers, individuals, remodelers and property managers. Some inventory is purchased for resale to provide needed items for sale that aren't donated in sufficient quantities.
How often do you get new merchandise?
Our inventory changes often. Donations are accepted and processed daily.
What is the ReStore refund policy?
Refunds are allowed within 14 days of purchase. You must have a receipt. Refunds are made for store credit only — NO cash refunds. ReCap appliances are warranted for 6 months. A receipt must accompany a returned appliance. Customers may receive a store credit or a refund in the same form as the purchase (cash or credit).
How do I go about donating an item?
If you have good, reusable or new materials, you can drop them off at any of our locations. To arrange a pick-up, you can fill out a donation pick-up request, or you can give us a call at (313) 653-4890.
Where do the proceeds from the ReStore sales go?
Proceeds from Habitat ReStores support Habitat for Humanity's primary objectives of building affordable, energy efficient houses in partnership with families in need and the rehabilitation of urban residential neighborhoods.
Are my donations Tax deductible?
Your donation may be tax deductible, depending on your individual situation. Please consult a tax professional or view our donation guidelines page for a look at the recommended values of your donations. In all cases, donors should refer to official IRS instructions for Form 8283, Non-cash Charitable Contributions, available at www.irs.gov.
Does the Habitat ReStore place a value on the items we donate?
No, it is the donor's responsibility to value the donation. View our donation guidelines page for a list of recommended values of your donation.
How can my business get involved?
There are many ways local businesses can contribute:

How can I help?
The Habitat ReStore is always looking for volunteers to help with stocking shelves, picking up donations, and general store upkeep. There are opportunities to volunteer at both our Detroit and Oakland locations.
